What do the studies say?

Leaning against

No study here tested harder sets against easier ones in people lifting as they age, so this is only part of the answer. Two studies disagree, because more volume did more: in adults aged 50-83, higher volumes went with more lean body mass. Two partly agree: women aged 60-80 gained similar strength from 1 set or 3 sets, and a pooled analysis of adults aged 50 to 92 found no clear link between volume and strength. Lean body mass is the body's weight apart from fat.

Computed from 4 studies that test this point, each judged by two readers, in full. 10 more studies are waiting for a full read and do not count yet.

“I want volume to come down. I want productive repetitions to go up. I want repetitions to actually mean something. And when I do that, that means the intensity is going to go up.”

Point 1 of 2 Leaning against

For people lifting as they age, fewer sets taken harder keep strength and muscle as well as more sets at lower effort

“The elderly women who participated in this study demonstrated statistically significant increases in levels of muscle strength after 24 sessions of progressive RT over a period of 12 weeks, without significant intergroup differences (1-SET versus 3-SET).”
